Evolution is essential for blockchain protocols. The first generation of blockchain, like Bitcoin, was introduced to improve the financial systems via a decentralized monetary platform enabling p2p transactions. Meanwhile, the second-generation blockchain projects enabled developers to build and launch their decentralized projects. However, both generation projects have certain limitations, including scalability and interoperability.

AION, developed by a Canadian enterprise blockchain firm called Nuco, is a third-generation blockchain network offering a trustless mechanism for cross-chain interoperability.

About AION

AION network is a multi-tier blockchain network supporting custom blockchain structures. It allows not only inter-chain communication but also enables dissimilar blockchains to communicate. It acts as a medium for transferring not just logic but also value across chains. To become an AION-compliant blockchain, certain standards should be met, like being decentralized, recognizing the inter-chain protocol etc.

AION utilizes its native token called AION for payments and transactions and rewards miners and stakers for securing the network.

Architecture

The multi-tier blockchain network of Aion enables chains to build between the member networks, and the network will use this to carry out transactions.

AION essentially serves as a hub for the participating networks. By traveling over the AION blockchain, data can be transferred from one blockchain to another. AION's multi-tier network is made up of 4 fundamental parts.

  • Connecting Network - In the AION blockchain ecosystem, connecting networks are protocols that allow communication between private and public blockchains.
  • Interchain transactions - These transactions originate on the source blockchain and are sent to the target blockchain via connecting networks and bridges.
  • Bridges - Interchain transactions throughout the network are validated by bridges, which operate as validators.
  • Participating networks - Networks that are a part of the AION ecosystem are considered participating networks. It can be a blockchain entity, oracle or database cluster as well.

Benefits

Interoperability

One of the key reasons of introducing AION is to bring interoperability to the blockchain ecosystem via a high-performance bridging mechanism. AION allows independent and inherently different blockchains to interact and exchange arbitary data, tokens, assets and more.

AION Virtual Machine

AVM is developed similar to Ethereum's EVM but is very lightweight and faster. Possessing the attributes of Java Virtual Machine, it allows developers to code in Java and other Web3 languages.

AION APIs

AION offers numerous tools making it easy for developers to code dApps on its blockchain.

Customizable

The AION ecosystem is flexible enough to design and build a customized blockchain that can include various consensus algorithms and virtual machines.
