Overview

Harmony is an open and fast blockchain-based platform that provides an infinitely scalable cryptocurrency that does not compromise security or decentralization. It was developed with the motto "decentralization at scale," emphasizing data sharing and the building of marketplaces for fungible and non-fungible assets.

About Harmony

Harmony is a sharding-based blockchain network providing a fully scalable, secure and energy-efficient ecosystem enabling users to build NFT marketplaces, buy and sell fungible and non-fungible assets and more. The platform is useful to share anything from credit ratings to ad exchanges and replace the common centralized exchanges.

The native token of Harmony is called One, which is used for specific purposes such as gas fees, staking, governance and even voting on changes in the network.

Architecture

Horizon Bridge

Harmony focuses on creating bridges between various chains that utilize Proof-of-Work or Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism. This is called the Horizon bridge. This bridge enables users to migrate assets between blockchains like Binance or Ethereum.

Sharding

The Harmony ecosystem utilizes sharding to enable faster, scalable and cheaper transactions. Sharding is splitting up a blockchain into different shards that all run simultaneously to speed up the chain. Sharding reduces congestion that leads to adding more users without slowing down the blockchain or having high gas prices.

Consensus Mechanism

1. Effective Proof-of-Stake (EPoS)

It can be considered a slightly modified version of Proof-of-Stake mechanism. In this, each shard requires 250 nodes to participate and uses a randomized sequence of all the nodes on the network so that each time a new block is produced, it would be a different set of 250 nodes. This prevents different nodes from colluding together to own a shard.

EPoS rewards stakers while preventing malicious stakers from taking over an entire shard and avoids stake centralization. They add security by introducing a downtime penalty and bans against bad validators.

2. Fast Byzantine Fault Tolerance (FBFT)

Harmony uses an improved PBFT (Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance) consensus mechanism known as Fast Byzantine Fault Tolerance (FBFT). It simplifies the communication processes on the platform.

This architecture assures that the number of tokens in possession determines the appointment of validators on the network. In other words, as the number of tokens possessed grows, so do the chances of validators being chosen, eradicating the necessity for a vote broadcasting. A basic multi-signature design and method are featured in the concept.
